Behind Every Successful Man: James F. Pomeroy’s Inspirations

I recently interviewed James F. Pomeroy-- Velocity Sports and Education and   International Financial Engineer.  What he had to say was interesting and fun:

Behind every successful man...is a lot of good people. In the case of James F. Pomeroy, he attributes a lot of  his professional success to his successful personal relationships with his family.

Everyone should be so blessed as James F. Pomeroy. The internationally known finance entrepreneur, philanthropist, and sports and education mentor has had some valuable mentoring himself. While he attributes his business achievements in part to the counsel of esteemed industry  leaders, he definitely credits his personal success to the positive influence of his family. Here are his thought on how they impacted his life:

His Dad James’ Dad is many things: All-American basketball player at Ole Miss (University of Mississippi), Army intelligence officer during the Korean conflict, trombone player with the Tommy Dorsey band...and all-around great tough yet great dad.  How great? Oh, he just gave up a huge corporate career opportunity to spend time with James and his brothers and sister while they were growing up. According to James, “He taught me that service to country and responsibility for your actions and choices are first and foremost. He also taught me that failure to take this life lesson to heart would require a self correction.  I chose to ignore this lesson and I reaped the consequences.”

His brothers and sisters  In his career, James was privileged to fly with the demi-gods of the financial world. But he learned one very important lesson from this heady experience: the reality that family is always first and always one’s grounding.  James stated, “When my net worth was US190M, it did not matter to my brothers and sisters t.  When it was negative US15M, it still did not matter to them.  What did matter to them was that I was happy and continued to be a role model for my kids and theirs.” He continued, “ My brother Gregory is the second highest-rated foot and ankle reconstructive surgeon in the world. He spends a month a year in Latin and South America fixing kids’ feet for free...helping them walk or run again.”

His sister Nadine James’ sister is committed to music and demonstrates this commitment not only through playing (Boston Pops, etc.), but through being the Director of Music Education for elementary through high school in western Massachusetts.  James said, “She is kick ass!  Yet, she gives it back to kids by investing time as a music teacher.  She changes kids lives every day!”

His youngest brother Ted James calls him a “construction artist.” Why? James says, “I call him an artist because he builds incredible homes that are so well crafted that he stands behind them for years and years - long after the warranties supplied by most of his peers are over.  He hand-crafts wood into living amorphous centers for families to live and love in.  Ted is all about his kids and his family. But for Ted, every time he completes a project, those clients really become his family as well.”

His Mom James calls his mother, now 85 years young, his most important business mentor. She lives with his father in Sarasota, Florida and is the one who taught the children to remain calm. James commented, “She said that things were not always what they appeared to be.  Referring to the bickering that would sometimes happen among the boys in the family, she also said that with a little testosterone …sometimes a lot of crazy happens!”  James’ mom  used her womanly skills set to calm the troops and redirect them to the right battles, not the stupid ones!  “She is awesome.  She was a former Rockette and broadway dancer.  She understood our athletic needs and quietly fueled the artist parts of all of us.  Each member of my family plays music or sings.  It is scary when we are all in one house.  The place simply rocks out!” he says.

James F. Pomeroy has inspired many, many people in the course of his career and his life. He does not forget that he, himself has been inspired by several amazing mentors in his life.
